The human body is amazing in its ability to move through space in so many variations. For dancers, it’s important to understand the three types of movement in dance.

In this short 9-minute video, George illustrates the three main types of movement dancers should be familiar with. The first is forward and back, using the Sagittal Plane, which we refer to as Body Flight action. This movement is used for walks and Chasses. The second involves the Coronal Plane, allowing us to rotate around our spine. This can be applied to both curvilinear figures (most figures in ballroom dancing) and rotational figures such as spins and pivots. The third uses the Transverse Plane to create sway from side to side. This is used to create sway, allowing the body to manage momentum as well as for decorative actions in line figures. George shows how these are applied in various types of figures. For more information related to planes of movement, visit this blog post.
