The Social Foxtrot, also known as the Rhythm Foxtrot, is generally considered the easiest ballroom dance to learn for beginners.
The dance originates from the Castle Walk in the early part of the 20th Century. It has many similarities to the American Smooth Foxtrot, in many ways forming the most basic elements of that dance. What makes it so easy is that all the figures begin with the lady's right foot (man's left foot) and all the figures use the same Slow Slow Quick Quick timing. It moves clockwise around the room with the man facing toward the wall. Another great aspect of this dance is that it can adapt to many kinds of music.
In this video dance class that totals almost an hour of instruction, you'll learn the Social Foxtrot with enough technique that you'll look great in any social dance setting.
Curriculum
This course is over an hour long. The program is broken into multiple parts to help make it easy for you to work on the individual figures.
Introduction (length 1:14)
In this lesson we give a quick overview of the dance.
Music and Structure (length 11:10)
We want to start you off on the right foot (see what we did there) by going over the music of Foxtrot and the basics of how we move forward and back in this dance.
Basic Walks (length 8:56)
The Foxtrot is generally a “walking dance,” which means that the movement is based on walking actions. We show you the basic forward and back walks that form the foundation of the dance.
Promenade (length 7:30)
Often danced poorly, we show you the correct technique for moving into Promenade Position and dancing the Closed Promenade figure.
Lady’s Underarm Turn (length 9:29)
In this lesson you'll learn the Lady’s Underarm Turn, also known as the Promenade Underarm Turn.
The Side Step (length 3:55)
This figure, also referred to as the Sway, is recommended after a Lady’s Underarm Turn, due to the turning momentum that step creates.
Left Rock Turn (length 5:53)
The final lesson covers a versatile figure that lets you move elegantly around obstacles on the floor, or to turn the corner.
