When we started this adventure of building a dance community in Delta, we didn’t know what to expect.
All we knew was that Delta, a large and prominent suburb of Vancouver was seriously lacking in support for ballroom dancing. There were scattered groups of people in Delta who loved to dance, but no studios or teachers focusing on that region.
We were blessed to find two awesome facilities and great people involved in each of them who really wanted to make ballroom dancing work in the Delta region. With the help of Maxine Levasseur of Kennedy Seniors Recreation Centre in North Delta and Roger and Sherry Everett of KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen we got some programs going and they grew steadily. We’re now enjoying five weekly group classes that are well attended.
Of course, it wasn’t easy. We put our own funds into helping create communication tools (like this website) so that people would know what’s going on. We also assisted both centers financially and in other ways so that they could advertise the programs through flyers and newspaper advertising. We put our own time and effort into designing meaningful courses at various levels, and through weekly emails. But all of this has paid off with classes that see up to 40 participants. That has been encouraging and I think we’re off to a great start.
The best part of the past year has been getting to know so many wonderful people. We feel supported and loved by those in the classes, and that has given us wings, especially when we feel tired after hours of teaching, answering Emails and documenting step patterns. Knowing that we are changing people’s lives means the world to both of us.
Thanks for being part of the programs, and especially for being part of our lives. You are deeply appreciated. We’re thankful for each and every student who comes through the Delta programs. Merry Christmas, and may the new year bring you lightness and joy in your dancing.
We put together a little video to brighten up your holiday. Hope you enjoy it!
