Sugartime

Artist: The McGuire Sisters

Album: Anthology

Song Length: 1:43

George's Thoughts: Made famous by the McGuire Sisters, the superstar trio who performed it for Queen Elizabeth and several US presidents over the years, this popular Quickstep track is light, airy, and simple but very danceable. I believe it was even signed as a Coca Cola theme song in the 1950's. While the original song is too slow for competition use, Alma Cogan's version on "Best of Ballroom Music Part 1" is not only faster at 52bpm, but has better presence and audio fidelity than the dated original. Still, I'm surprised how good the McGuire Sisters' recording has weathered the test of time. There are other great pieces on their 1999 50-song Anthology album that also work well for dancing. Like "Ding Dong," a great Quickstep number if sped up very slightly, or "Around the World," a charming Slow Waltz selection.

Song Lyrics:

Da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da

Well . . .
Sugar in the mornin'
Sugar in the evenin'
Sugar at suppertime
Be my little sugar
And love me all the time

Honey in the mornin'
Honey in the evenin'
Honey at suppertime
So by my little honey
And love me all the time

Put your arms around me
And swear by stars above
You'll be mine forever
In a heaven of love

Sugar in the mornin'
Sugar in the evenin'
Sugar at suppertime
Be my little sugar
And love me all the time

Well, well

Sugar in the mornin'
Sugar in the evenin'
Sugar at suppertime
Be my little sugar
And love me all the time

Honey in the mornin'
Honey in the evenin'
Honey at suppertime
So by my little honey
And love me all the time

Put your arms around me
And swear by stars above
You'll be mine forever
In a heaven of love

Sugar in the mornin'
Sugar in the evenin'
Sugar at suppertime
Be my little sugar
And love me all the . . .
Now Sugartime (sugartime)
Is anytime that you're near (that you're near)
'Cause you're so dear
So don't you roam (don't roam)
Just be my honeycomb (honeycomb, honeycomb)
And live in a heaven of love.

Sugar in the mornin'
Sugar in the evenin'
Sugar at suppertime
Be my little sugar
And love me (love me)
All (all all all)
The time

Sugartime
Sugartime
Sugartime!
